Magna Carta Libertatum (Great Charter of Freedoms) is sometimes referred to as the Magna Charta. This charter was signed by a hesitant King John in 1215, establishing a basis for contemporary constitutional justice. The Magna Carta curtailed the king’s authority, preventing him from imprisoning individuals without trial or at his discretion. Judicial courts were instituted to adjudicate accused individuals, with other measures to protect the right to justice.
