Jonestown was a remote settlement in Guyana, South America, established by the People’s Temple, a cult led by Jim Jones. The People’s Temple began in Indiana in the 1950s, promoting a message of racial and social equality. Jones moved the Temple to California and then to Guyana in the 1970s, due to increasing scrutiny and legal issues. On November 18, 1978, under Jones’ orders, over 900 of his followers died in a mass murder-suicide event, often referred to as the Jonestown Massacre.
